I've heard that class sizes are increasing across the region due to the economy, but I'd love to see some data instead of hearing rumors. Any info you can provide would be much appreciated! |
Well, it isn't a rumor, FCPS at least (where my kid goes) put larger class sizes (higher teacher ratios) into the budgets for this year as a way to eliminate teaching positions. But you may not see it in K. You're more likely to see it in upper grades. Schools want the K-3 years to have low ratios because those are critical years for school success and learning to read. |
My son's NOVA private school has 15-16 kids in each K class -- I've heard there's been an increase in apps to the privates, even in K, because of the increases in the public school class size, but . . . that's rumor, I suppose. |
Fairfax County half-day afternoon class: 20 children |
Arlington County: 23 kids, teacher & assistant (max class size for county)
I haven't heard of a K class size in N. Arlington less than 20 and all schools in N. Arlington, except one added at least one K class |
Fairfax County full-day K class: 21 children, 2 teachers, one aide |
Fairfax County -
1st grade regular class room = 20 kids 1st grade partial immersion = 24 kids |
All the kindergarten classes at my daughter's school in Arlington have 22 or 23 children in class with 1 teacher and 1 assistant. |
