Republicans In the District

Anonymous
Am I the only one? Granted I'm a fairly left of right Republican (supported Romney, and hated Palin, ok with Obama except for healthcare ) but when I wear my Romney 08 t-shirt to go running or to Harris Teeter I get the meanest looks as if I have baby blood on my hands. I know I've been cut off or honked at in traffic for the 'W' or Romney sticker on my car, but there must be some Republicans that live in the District. Do they all live on Capitol Hill? What gives? Are most the the Republicans that post on this board in Va? Even Arlington voted about 75% for Obama that's get close to DC margins.

Most Republicans have left the district for tax reasons--if you are financially productive the District wants to take all your money so it makes sense to live in a more tax sympathetic area like Virginia. Of course so many people from Western PA nad NY have invaded Virginia for our great living model that soon we could be as bad with taxes as the District or Maryland. We also like our guns and the Dristrict isn't a fan of gun ownership there either. FYI--I am not sure you are a Republican if the only issue you had with Obama is healthcare??? What about taxes? What about national security. What about abortion? Obama is left of the left so I am not sure what issues about him you liked? Anyway--keep wearing your Romney shirt. I liked him--too bad that the country still has so much religious predjudice because he would make a great leader-I don't love everything about him but he is strong and supports those who want to work and create.

OP here. My "being ok with Obama" was when taking in context of Palin being on a ticket. That was an insult to me, but it was all to rally the JoeSixPack crowd. While I have a problem with taxes on the national level, I like living in the District and wont change that for anything. I'd rather work to get Jack Evans the support he needs to lower DC taxes instead of "running away". I support a person's freedom of choice for their body, I don't want govt intrusion into our private lives. I'm closer to a libertarian in that regard. On a national security level he's still carrying out Bush era security policies so no deviation there. All seems about right to me. There is a lot of whine out there but things aren't as bad as they seem.

Interesting point on national security and I am a fan of Gates but I am against the vilification of the CIA--and I believe he is behind Holder on this. I applaud your working to try to lower taxes in the DC but it's going to be an uphill climb. It's amazing that people don't get that most people who you would want to attract DC because they can pay more won't stay once they are buying houses etc and many businesses are leaving and/or won't start a business because of the tax issue. California is a good example of what happens when successful people and businesses are targeted--they are actually bringing less revenue with higher taxes because of the reasons I mentioned. Some people are just so jealous that they think how dare someone make a lot of money when I can't. I will punish them by trying to take from them. We are actually saving 30K a year by living in VA--that is just too much for us to ignore with children and other family obligations. What about the unions? DC schoolchildren are now being forced to be part of a sick school system because dems are against vouchers. I am happy that there is an attempt to help DC schools but I would be mad if my kid were denied a voucher.

Overall while I am pro life I just want the government out of my business in just about every other area.

I think Romney is handsome; that's beside the point--but just have to put it out there. I hope he gives it another shot, not least because he seems smart and effective, but if only because there is such religious intolerance in this country-- the same people who bend over backwards to not bash one group often happily disparage another. At least it might cause a moment of reflection in some people's MO that it is fine behavior to caricature Mormons, or devout Christians or whomever else just seems to wear a popular culture target here in the US.

You are not alone. I am a conservative and live in the district. However, most of us have to live in the shadows so that our kids still have friends and our homes are not vandalized during election season.

It's true--to preserve friendships, of people I know and truly love, or to even have basic acquaintances--I bite my tongue. Sometimes it pisses me off, as (it could be perception) my friends of opposing views NEVER seem to bite their tongues, while fully aware that I am marching to a different drummer. So Dems, what do you suggest--do you want to hear 'us' in face to face encounters?

I bit my tongue a lot when I lived in Central Virginia. Republicans in the District don't have any special burden to bear. The important thing is to be polite in day-to-day relations and avoid discussing politics. I could vote, write letters to the editor, attend meetings of the few people who shared my views. It wasn't necessary to needlessly antagonize my neighbors.

However, you say that you have friends who treat you this way. Maybe you should talk to them about that. It is unfair to treat you that way.

This is too bad....I am a huge dem, but i LOVE my repub friends! They keep debate alive and lively and it takes two parties to balance this insane country!

I think you get looks, OP, simply b/c it is SUCH a dem city...

I think that Republicans get about 10% of the vote in general elections in the District. So yes, you are in the minority in DC. Sorry you are getting treated badly, though. That's just not cool, but I am a Dem and people are rude to me, too. The area lacks some of the manners we had back home.

One thing regarding Romney. Wasn't he the guy who first passed universal healthcare for his state?

Yep. That doesn't mean it has all worked out perfectly. There are some aspects they would revisit, and many people have been saying to look at their example for lessons learned. They were brave to pilot it though.

I agree that Romney is very handsome I just don't get why so many people bag on the Mormons. I am not a mormon but I have known many through business and life and I can say that every mormon I have met is beyond nice and soooooooooooooooo honest. Gosh these are people who are so healthy they don't even have cafeine. All there kids also seem to be so nice and police. Anyway-I like honest for a change.

If he's so honest, why did he switch from being Mr. "pro-choice universal healthcare" governor of a liberal state into Mr. "I'm the true Conservative" presidential candidate?

Barney Frank once called Mitt Romney "the most intellectually dishonest human being in the history of politics". OK, yeah, it's Barney Frank, but hey, the guy's seen a lot of dishonest politicians

I have a hard time taking an assessment from Barney Frank seriously; Mitt Romney designed universal healthcare--it was by design totally funded privately which aligns with conservative values. This was changed when he left office, although he warned that it would bankrupt the system.

I'm fine with mormons as long as they don't try to push their religion on me.
