Kalamazoo?

DD got a generous scholarship from the school. It was going to be a safety, but the money seems alluring. Anyone have any experience with the college?

It’s a college...that changes lives.

I assume you're referring to the book?

I know the area and I know Michigan. Can't comment specifically re: Kalamazoo College. Go visit ! Take a cheap SW airlines flight from BWI to GRR/rent a car. It's close to Western Michigan University (23,000), so even though K-College is small, the area is a college town. Great music scene. If you were to drive further north a few hours, you come to the most beautiful part of the state of Michigan

I went to K (class of '96) and it was great for me. The program has changed a bit since then, but the ability/expectation to do foreign study, internships, and a senior project was just what I wanted. I was a science major, and i think it would have been hard to work foreign study into my class schedule elsewhere. And the senior project led directly to my graduate school choice and my postdoc experience and eventual employment.

Campus life was good. I liked the small atmosphere and small class sizes and relationship with professors who got to know me. And Kalamazoo is a good sized city with things to do,

It's worth a visit in my opinion!

I think one of those schools that is on the brink of becoming extremely popular (due in part to the insanely competitive admissions process right now).

PP from 9:35 again. Just to address the "safety school" aspect -- I was top of my high school class and had won state and national academic awards. I chose K over other more prestigious schools because of what it offered. I got a great education and went to a top (HYPS) graduate school. I could have had more academic rigor and probably a peer group at a higher academic level at a different school, but K was right for me and I wouldn't be where I am and who I am if I'd gone elsewhere.

I visited when I was looking at schools in the late 90s. (I am from SE MI.) Campus was nice, but was too small for my liking, so it depends on your child’s interests and needs. I recall the student giving us the tour say she sometimes had to go to the Western MI Univ. Campus to do research, which turned me off. But now there’s Internet.

It’s a pretty part of MI, very conservative and religious. Like another PP said, good music scene. And lots of breweries, not that your daughter will be imbibing.

Doctor/dentist factory. Pretty liberal. Wealthy, smart students. Sort of an easy drive to Chicago. Kalamazoo and the more conservative Hillsdale are two of finest private colleges in the Midwest.

Thanks for insight! She's interest in biology/chemistry/psychology, so it's nice to hear the good words.

The one guy in my HLS class from Kalamazoo loved that place with an intensity usually reserved for Stanford and Williams grads. And he was a really sharp, good person. A sample size of one, to be sure, but K is staying on my radar for my own kids.

I went to a different school in the ACM and toured Kalamazoo; I have friends who atttended. My understanding of its reputation is that it’s strong, and if your child is at all interested in studying abroad, it’s very well known for that.

Otherwise, all of these ACM schools will be an excellent choice for someone who wants to go to graduate school since they emphasise student research with faculty, which is hugely important.

If the $ looks good, I’d go for it. I loved my college experience and have no regrets not choosing be more prestigious colleges I got into.

What is ACM? Is that an athletic conference?

How much coin did they offer? It's an expensive school. Mostly rich Midwestern kids.

Associated Colleges of the Midwest. But K-zoo is not in it.
