Infertility Support and Discussion

rather than highjack the other thread, can anyone comment on how much DHEA, or when to take it? I read the article that was posted, and it was very encouraging.
TIA |
I'm the OP from the other thread & I'd be interested to know more about this too!
75 mg per day is what is recommended, for 3-4 months, prior to an IVF cycle. I didn't see the article that was posted, so I don't know what it says, but my RE said that the only studies on the use of DHEA concerned whether it helped an IVF cycle. He was not comfortable with me taking it longer, but I believe other REs studying it feel differently. I haven't decided what I want to do.
The article referenced in the previous thread basically said they only studied in IVF cycles, but there was an interesting increase in spontaneously pregancies observed in older 40 women while on DHEA awaiting for their IVF cycles. It seems to improve ovarian reserve and quality. Studies are ongoing.

Here is a link to the article for those who haven't seen it:

I didn't read the other thread, but I'd research DHEA carefully if I were you. I remember reading about how great it was for something else (can't remember what) a few years ago but I also read that if you don't have a deficiency it can really mess you up, so you really shouldn't take it unless you've had your levels checked and they are low. FWIW.
I am taking 75 mg daily of DHEA. My doctor at Shady Grove Ok'd that amount and said that although the benefits were not proven, he was fine with my taking it. I have failed one IVF cycle and planning the next one now. My husband and I decided to have a phone consult with a doctor at Colorado Center for Reproductive Medicine (CCRM - they have the highest IVF success rates in the country - - higher than the national average, etc.). The CCRM doctor actually recommended that I not start my next IVF cycle until I have been on DHEA for at least 2 months. He said the studies show that taking if for less than two months won't make a difference to your IVF cycle, but IVF success rates improve after two months on it. He also said the longer you take it, the greater the success. So, we are thinking about taking it for three months and then doing our next cycle (I am already 42 so don't want to wait too long to get started again).
