Universal Studios- early purchase tickets or at the gate?

Do you think we should buy our tickets ( LA- the week of Christmas break) ahead of time or will we be safe buying them at the gate/day of? We have some flexibility in our schedule and do not want to pre-commit to which day we visit.

Not at the gate. More expensive. Look for advanced discount packages. Have you looked yet? Never pay full price.

OP here- I looked online and the discount packages I found were for multiple days. I, really, only want to spend 1 (very full) day of our trip at Universal.

If you are interested in Potter stuff you want to buy ahead of time so you can get the early access to avoid the lines.

Buy before you go. And have a huge amount of patience. You are going when everyone else goes. It will be a nightmare driving to the park unless you stay onsite. Go with really low expectations.

At that time of year, buy before you go, and if you can, I would do the front-of-line tickets. Get there early. It can take a very long time to park if you are not staying on site.

If you are doing Harry Potter Diagon and Hogsmead are in different parks so you will need a park hopper to do them both. Express pass is well worth they money during that time.
