Soccer
Lotta parents of (8 year old) kids who play two years up (because their small club doesn't have teams for every year) of (state) top 10 (Got soccer) teams who's kids are (self declared) as one of the best players on their team chime in with comments about how age cutoff stuff doesn't matter and the best just work so hard. I recall one exposing themselves about 200 pages back with righteousness about how they know what is right for youth soccer. When the realization of being a big fish in a very small pond hits, I hope their kids will be able to look back on soccer as worth it and not a waste of their childhood. And their will enjoy soccer when they get older and not have PTSD from it. Then there are the other parents of kids on top 10 teams (in the region of their league) who's kids are mid HS or above so they are dodging the age cutoff and feel free to yammer about how age cutoffs don't matter because they will not have a reckoning. Finally, there are the coaches that coached a top 10 team once in the 1990s that know oh so much and spout off how age cutoffs don't matter because to them players are fungible. |
A Snowplow Parent tries to remove all obstacles, challenges and adversities from their kids upbringing path instead of letting them learn how to navigate the difficult realities of life. |
We will see the date change play out. But from what I have seen, demoted players are likely to quit soccer. So if the fools gold of being older in an age group goes away, a different group of kids will be ending soccer. No need to guess how many. |
Yep, or will quit because they played with mostly the same group for years and can no longer. That would be a shame, especially since part of what's driving it is to increase participation. That's why I hope the powers that be ease any transition at first to the younger age groups (while perhaps giving increased flexibility around the trapped seasons). |
Why don't the exceptional players who play up at the highest levels quit since they're no longer playing with who they were playing with for years? This quitting because you're no longer with your cafeteria buddy must be a Rec mindset thing. |
Ahh. Hadn't heard that one. So if you can dodge a wrench you can dodge a ball sorta mindset in your house? What's most interesting about this thread is the wild ways people are raising the next generation. I come here to feel so much better about my family situation. Keep it goin' folks. |
Yes, they will also be focusing there as well |
LOL Wrenches are flying around in your house? |
Actually, they do, eventually. Maybe it's burnout OR injury OR age. Everyone is humbled at some point. While some look to exploit this change for short-term gain, if not done with thoughtfulness of the players, it comes at a cost to the larger eco-system. Anyone who loves to play soccer and wants to see the game grow and provide more opportunties should care. |
You're saying every truly elite young soccer player eventually quits. Where can we find verification of that? Do all elite young baseball, hockey, basketball, football players also get humbled and quit? |
Yes, not ALL make it. And too many think that won't be them until it happens. |
There's no industry or profession where ALL who start make it Nice try on the pivot though |
Your animosity and envy towards the top tier young players is obvious Let's hope they all succeed |

If only it was that easy… GA hats ugly as hell though. That’s why people don’t wear them. Not a bad second option though. |
