Colds and Daycare?

Anonymous
My little guy (14 weeks) has his first cold. Mommy and Daddy have it too and strangely enough, his seems a lot milder than ours. Now that we have a humidifier going and his mattress propped, he's been happy all day. My question is... how do you determine when he should and shouldn't be kept home from daycare because of it? The policy at his daycare is they have to be 24 hours fever and diarrhea free... I don't think there is a policy on colds. We were planning on keeping him home tomorrow, but aren't sure about the rest of the week. Since he's been happy today I am tempted to send him tomorrow, but won't for the sake of the other infant parents. What would you do?

Keep your little guy home until he's had a whole 24 hrs. of being himself again. Hope you're all better soon.

Our daycare says that if children aren't acting normally, they should stay home. However, we use a home daycare, and she's a little more understanding of us taking a kid in with a bit of a runny nose, as long as they are acting like themselves.

What is the color of the discharge from the nose, if it is clear and he is acting normal I would taek him to daycare (I am assuming no fever and no diarrhea as per the rules of course). If it is discolored or he is not himself, I would keep him home.

If the snot is clear and the temperature is under 100, I would send my child to daycare - as would every other parent in our daycare.

When my son was really little like that, I kept him home just because "he" would feel more comfortable at home with Mom while sick. BUT, they get LOTS of colds, so you'll be using lots of leave if you always do this. Plus, colds can last up to 10 days. So it becomes a judgment issue. If you think he's feeling OK (and he meets day care guidelines) send him. There will be times, with stomach viruses, rash viruses, etc., where he's going to feel awful.

I often try to pick up early when he's under the weather like that, too.

Thanks for the insight. We stayed home today since my little guy was fussing in his sleep a lot last night. His snot has been clear, and actually his nose hasn't been runny -- just that he's sneezing and coughing a bit. We'll be sending him to daycare tomorrow.
