We are expecting! Mama and Mommy? Mom and Mama? Mamma W and Mama J?

Anonymous
My wife and I are expecting our first child.

We are unsure of what we will be called. Do we let it happen naturally (once they start speaking)?

Don’t sweat it. It will come naturally to the two of you and then them.

Congrats!

My sister and wife do mommy and mama

Figure out what you feel comfortable with and what sounds good to you. Don't wait until they start speaking. They learn to speak by hearing you and if you don't name yourselves, they won't learn your names!

We do Mommy and Mama. DD is 5.

Congrats on your child!

We tried referring to ourselves as Mama (initial) after our first was born but found it too cumbersome, so we switched to Mama and Mommy. Most of the other two mom families that we have met use the same.

Our oldest is now in preschool (just had our second), and he has no problem keeping it straight and will correct other people. Our parents still occasionally have to pause before remembering but generally have it down. Our child also knows that either of us will respond to any mom word if needed, and we are occasionally starting to use mom if we need something more generic. I will be curious to see if it changes as he gets older.

Just FYI, your child will probably say mama first, so if one of you is mommy you will have to wait a bit longer before hearing "your" name. The day our son called me mommy was very exciting, though!

Google Brandi Carlisle Evangeline and watch the Intro to the song about this

Another couple that does Mommy and Momma. Most of the lesbian families I know do this.

My best friends do Mom and other Mom, depending upon who their child is talking to. It works.

What about when the kids get older? Teens don't call their mothers Mommy or Mamma.

Maybe the dad couples could chime in as well?

Mommy/Mom and Meema!

The couples I know use Mama and Mommy or Mommy and Eema (Jewish - and that's Hebrew for mom)

Congratulations! I prefer the mom names without the initials.

We do Mama and Mommy. Our friends who are jewish do Ima (Eema?) and Mommy.
