End of March Spring Break - Which east coast beaches are warm enough?

Anonymous
Visiting friends in NC for a few days at the end of March, and able to drive farther south for some warmer beach time. How much farther south will we have to go until the water is warm enough to at least frolick a bit around? Any recommendations?

It’s really weather dependent. Some years Hilton Head and N. Florida are warm enough. Other years Naples and Fort Lauderdale are barely warm enough. One year we went to Sanibel and the highs were in the 60’s.

Sorry, we've already booked there this year. Not any more room for anyone else.

It is likely to be warm enough to walk on the beach in SC in March, but it is not likely to be warm enough to get into the water. The Atlantic Ocean is COLD in the winter and stays cold until well into the summer. I've been in SC in June when the air temp was quite warm, but the water was still cold. That feels refreshing when the air temp is around 90 degrees, but when it's even in the 70-low 80s it just feels cold. The Gulf is shallower and warms up faster. You need to go to Miami or the Keys to get reliable "beach" weather in March.

I'm from Northeast Florida. It totally depends on the year. We have had lots of years when the air and the water temperatures were plenty warm enough to swim at Jax Beach, Ponte Vedra and St Augustine. And we've had years when it's still really chilly, You could still have fun wading and looking for sharks teeth and shells. The water just might be to chilly too comfortably swim. My kids would swim anyway. We have absolutely had 80+ degree weather in late March many years. St Augustine is a fun town to explore even if you don't go to the beach.

We've frolicked in Amelia island and Jekyll island that time of year. Great places for Spring break, and great weather, not crowded at all. Delicious seafood. We did a fun boat trip to see Cumberland island from the marina on Amelia island.
