I was quoted the following for a puppy, from one vet clinic I called:
Office visit - $76 (first office visit: $20 discount) DAPP - $37 Rabies - $36 Lyme - $40 Bordetella - $27 Flu (CIV) - $44 Seems quite expensive! |
| Seems okay, these are around the prices we pay. Do you really need Lyme? I didn't do it for my dogs as even the vet said it wasn't all that effective. |
| If you don't live downtown but in a more suburban/rural area (in the DMV for sure) I'd skip the Lyme vaccine and be sure you're using a flea/tick preventive. |
| My vet does most vaccines without an office visit (a tech can do it), so long as the dog has been seen before. A standard office visit is $40 though, not $80. Ffx county |
| You can attend one of the low cost vaccination clinics at the HRA: http://www.humanerescuealliance.org/vaccination-clinic |
| Seems like the standard pricing, but it does add up. |
| We don't do most of the vaccines. |
Which do you do, then? |
|
Go to a low cost vaccine clinic if these prices seem to high for you. It is very very very important for your pet to be vaccinated. F
ind a vet you trust who can discuss which vaccines you can skip if you feel that you don't want to do them all at once - pp is right that Lyme might not be necessary, for example - but don't make that call on your own; consult with your vet. |
Just rabies as required by law. My dog has bad reactions to most vaccines and is not around farm animals and is not kenneled. Many of these vaccines are scams. |
Not the PP, but rabies and DAPP. Use risk/benefit to determine whether you think it beneficial for your pet/lifestyle to administer the other vaccines. Flu and Bordetella may be required if you want to board your pet. Lyme risk depends on location and likelihood of tick exposure. |

Seems in the range of normal. I’ve been fed up with vet prices lately so I posted on Nextdoor and someone told me about “EZVet Clinic” at Pet Supplies Plus in Falls Church. It’s like a CVS Minute Clinic for dogs and the vet is just fine. I’ve been taking my puppy there for her rounds of shots and it’s only about $75 TOTAL each time (plus the expensive flea/tick stuff but you can’t avoid paying for that and their prices are good). They have these puppy packages. I was amazed by how many rounds of shots puppies need and how much it would run with a traditional vet/office visit each time. My lord.
I think Rite Aid also has some kind of low cost vet clinic inside of some locations. |
Where in FFX Co is an office cost only $40? Please do share! |
Do you remember how many different vaccines you got there? |
| I have my dog on a wellness plan with Banfield for around $38 a month and I love the convenience. All of their vaccines are included, twice a year physicals with basic testing, and you get free office visits if you want to come in with any concerns. You also get a discount on anything you get done out of pocket. I like having the cost split up like that and when I did the math with quotes from local vets it is well worth the cost. |
