Family-fun place to go for a weekend in October?

We've decided to take a mini-trip in October when DH's workload is going to lighten a bit. We'd like to go somewhere fun for the kids (and adults!) that's within a two to two-and-a-half-hour drive. Since it will be in October, hopefully it will be somewhere where the weather is still fine. We've done Philadelphia and Lancaster PA already, so perhaps something in the other direction? Thanks for any suggestions.

| I would aim for Shenandoah National Park. The foliage will be beautiful and there is hiking, horseback riding, etc. |

| Nemacolin is great but is 3 hours so a little further--it's in western PA |

| Bedford PA is beautiful. There is a new resort and during the first and second weekends in October there is a festival in town. |

We just got back from Busch Gardens Williamsburg and had a great time. We also did an evening walk in Colonial Williamsburg.
Took us 2 hrs from Alexandria even with Labor Day traffic. |

Another vote for Williamsburg. Depending on the age of your kids, they have many kids programs and Busch Gardens is open on weekends with a Halloween theme.
If you're looking for something more laid back, Wintergreen Resort is a great place to visit in the fall. |

| We loved our visit to Bedford Springs Omni. Old hotel inn, in the vein of Greenbriar but less stuffy. Easy 2 hour ride to PA countryside. Check out the country side, great food in the hotel, indoor pool and nice rooms. Nice town. Really a surprise. We were so happy with it. Check it out on the web. Rates are usually quite good. |

| Also on Bedford Springs. The pool is from the springs-- really fun. The Spa is great, the food is healthy and very good, and the kids club was terrific if you need a break too. There is hiking in the area, and other attractions, as well. |
