| My DS is 12 and has taken Vyvanse since he was 8. It works great for him but now that he is in middle school, he has more homework. His pill wears off by 6pm but his homework doesn't end then. I will be calling his pediatrician tomorrow about a short term booster pill so he isn't taking 3 hours to do one hour of homework after 6pm. Has anyone found something that works short term? |
|
He won't be able to sleep. It is what it is. Get a 504 or iep for modified homework.
Or you do what we do--cut out extracurriculars and screen time to slog through homework. |
| We use 10 mg of short acting Ritalin at 5 PM. No problem with sleep because she also takes clonidine which knocks her out. Without the clonidine, we'd probably use 5 mg a little earlier and melatonin to sleep. |
He is in a private school so no 504 or IEP. He had no more than 10 minutes of HW in public ES and I thought that was ridiculous. Now that he is in MS, he starts school about an hour and a half earlier which means he has to get up a lot earlier. The medication is wearing off due to his earlier school hours. He doesn't get any screen time during the week except for when he does some of his HW on Google Classroom. |
| You need a lunchtime or afternoon booster that he takes at school. It helps a lot. |
|
My middle schooler uses a resource class at school to get him started on his homework so that he has less of it at home. In exchange, he gets one less elective, which doesn't matter since he goes to his native language school on weekends. |
| Add Intuniv? |
I know in high school, he will have free periods but he doesn't have anything like that in middle school. I wish he did! |
Can he take a booster before his daytime medication wears off? |
Yes. The morning dose wears off gradually. The booster just makes a new peak followed by a more extended wearing off. |
| My 12 year old son also takes Vyvanse in the morning. Around 5:30 he takes an Intuniv to get through the evening. It is a non stimulant so won't keep him awake like others. It actually makes him a little sleepy a few hours later. Works well for my son, and he has no problem going to sleep. |
You can have an iep or 504 in a private. |
| My 13-year-old daughter has a prescription for 5 mg of Focalin for homework. |
| More importantly, why did you think 10 minutes of homework in elementary school was a problem? The studies are pretty clear that homework is only helpful in areas where a student is struggling. Beyond that, D.C.'s time could be spent doing other productive activities like reading for enjoyment or hanging out with friends. Our es is moving away from homework and I'm cheering them all the way. |
