Alternative to Baby Gate

Anonymous
We just moved into a new house. Our youngest is 2.5. Accordingly, he does not "need" a baby gate to keep himself from falling down the stairs, so my DH does not want to install a gate. I would like a way to contain DS on our main level (the second floor), though, so I'm not running up and down the stairs when he takes off. Any suggestions?

We use an ex pen that we used with our dogs

A retractable baby gate will give you the functionality of a gate but stay out of the way when you don't need it.

DH strongly wants to avoid having to drill in to install something. I decided that wasn't my hill to die on if there is another option.

If you've got the right kind of stairs for it, this may be an option: https://smile.amazon.com/dp/B01MFCLM4O/ref=sspa_dk_detail_5?th=1

North gate superyards. They can be moved wherever you need. You can put them in front of the stairs or in front of the front door etc. I went to Walmart and got a box of canopy ties and if we need to anchor the superyards, these are helpful. They are elastic and you can anchor the superyards to door knobs, bannisters chairs, etc. Since we have a very open floor plan with relatively few walls to anchor things on, these helped a lot.
