Question for HR about leave

Anonymous
I am allowed to carry forward 30 annual leaves per year. Because I will be taking my maternity leave next May, I would like to ask them for an exception to carry over 35 days instead. Is this uncommon? We don't have paid maternity leave and I would like to take 4 months off next year. Thanks!

It would not be allowed at my organization because it sets a precedent and also opens them up to issues of favoritism and in the worst case scenario, is fodder for someone using it as evidence they were discriminated against (as part of a larger claim).

Depends on the Org. My non-profit is being very strict about it for all the reasons noted by 10:09. However, a few years ago under different leadership they would have allowed it. It doesn't hurt to ask, but the answer might be no.

doesn't hurt to ask.... but be ready for them to say no. and then be ready to ask for scheduled unpaid leave for your time off... if you really want it.

never hurts to ask.
but being able to carry over 30 days is extremely generous already. Almost no employers even give that many PTO days per year.
Therefore I expect your request will be rejected.

OP here. Thank you for your feedback. i guess I'll ask. If the answer is no, more time off for me in Dec.
