Are you ok with giving money to your kids school PTS and 1/2 of every dollar goes to a for profit company?
Why would you not just donate directly to the scools PTA? It is tax deductible and 100% goes back to the school. Anyone know why is FCPS still allowing boosterthon when rules say no? |
| There is a very lengthy thread all about boosterthon in the MD schools forum. I asked my school about opting out for my kid and was told that he would miss a special time of the school coming together and bonding. Barf. |

My kids' FCPS ES has had Boosterthon for a few years. And the PTA heard all the complaints.
So we tried a simple donation request this year. Which resulted in us coming up a bit short from what we usually end up with Boosterthon. This, despite the fact that the donation was 100% tax deductible plus no teaching time was utilized. |
I would definitely have been pulling my child out that day!! |
That is gross. Shame on the school officials who allow this to go on. |
| I think there was also a long Boosterthon thread in the VA schools forum a while back. |
| It is completely unethical. You donate money for a nonprofit cause, and half of it goes to a for-profit. I can't believe anyone is still doing Boosterthon. |
Yep that is how I feel! Ridiculous! |
I felt the same way. I am PP 10:54. |
But the problem is it's not just one day--the race is one day--but for several days leading up to the race there is a lot of hyping the kids up to get pledges. Our PTA cloaked it in character education. |
Exactlly -- we just had this at our school. They have an assembly every day for 2 weeks for this. No good way to skip it. |

I am on the PTA board of our elementary. Over my dead body will that kind of scam come to the school. |
And I am a principal of an elementary school. Over my dead body will that kind of scam come to our school and waste instructional time to line the pockets of some company. |
Thank you both! Our PTA got a new president last year and she mentioned bringing in Boosterthon. I know I wasn't the only parent who was against it, and she did eventually nix the idea. I'm surprised principals at any school allow it. I wouldn't let the people in charge of this company "educate" my kids about anything. |
I wish you were at my school. I went to school every day last year and pulled my kids out of the huddles. I think if more parents went in and watched these daily brainwashing sessions and heard their kids literally chanting "Get pledges!" they would be less inclined to participate. My kids go to school to learn, not to get hyped up to be the top car salesman of the quarter. |
