Concerta?

Anonymous
just started ds on a higher dose of concerta yesterday. last night by 6 he was complaining about being really tired and saying his body hadn't adjusted to new time yet. And then this morning he seemed so sleepy after taking the pill. Does this mean the dose is now too high? Random side effect that should wear off in a couple days? Thoughts?

Definitely give it a few days.

I've never heard of sleepyness being a side effect of concerta, but I'd call the person who prescribed it just in case. Or check w/ a pharmacist where you picked it up.

But in general, we've always been advised to give new meds/dosages a week (barring really terrible side effects).

Give it a week and see how he's feeling. The fatigue he reported in the evening might have been a bit of a crash as the medication wore off, and the fatigue this morning might have been if he didn't sleep as well last night at the higher dose (I do have a harder time falling asleep when I'm taking Concerta, even well after it should have worn off). It could also be an unrelated coincidence, or maybe he's paying more attention to how he's feeling due to the dosage change and noticed fatigue that otherwise might not have been noteworthy. Giving a little time for his body to adjust will help you figure it out.
