Food, Cooking, and Restaurants
| We have a very picky eater and have run out of ideas for breakfast. We used to give him cereal or oatmeal and a jar of fruit or fruit and cereal mix but he does not want to eat that anymore. He does not like fruit that much, bananas or apples etc. It's so frustrating! Please help me with some ideas. Lunch and dinner have been easier so far but would love to hear what your kids like! Thanks so much |

Fruit has never been a problem for our son - I'm more concerned about the lack of protein in his diet. for breakfast, he eats toast with cream cheese (usually raisin bread) or jam, yogurt, and fruit. We buy the large jars of mandarin oranges, sliced peaches, apricots, etc (Dole and Libby's are the brands I've seen) -- the oranges in particular are a big hit. For protein alternatives, he loves cottage cheese, baked beans, and hummus (with crackers or mini rice cakes). We try to get him to at least taste whatever we're having for dinner, too, but most nights he ends up with a mac-and-cheese or grilled cheese sandwich.
I've agonized over his diet so much - but I think I've finally come to terms with the fact that kids will eat like kids and sneak liquid vitamins into his bedtime milk!

Breakfast favorites for our 19 month old: Yogurt, waffles and "breadsticks" (bread cut into strips and dipped/soaked in olive oil)
But when all else fails, we just feed her lunch or dinner foods for breakfast. Beans, turkey, veggies, fruits. She doesn't know what's a "breakfast food", and we're just happy she eats. |
| french toast, every morning. only way I can get him to eat eggs. |
| Yogurt! My son would subsist on dairy alone if he could, I think. We actually mix our own, with plain, whole milk yogurt and pureed fruit, so we can avoid the extra sugar and add a higher level of fruit to yogurt if we want. We have done peaches, pears, applesauce, apricots, blueberies, cherries, mango...etc. |
| Try non-breakfast foods for breakfast--as long as there is protein, etc., doesn't matter what he/she eats. Sounds like your baby is bored? |
| Thank you all so much! this is very helpful |

don't give up on all those foods your baby is dismissing. he'll come back to them soon. i promise.
at that age, my DS stopped eating yogurt and applesauce b/c he didn't like me feeding him, and he couldn't use a spoon yet. so we just went with cereals and fruit. he really loved dehydrated fruit (from trader joe's) and cheerios. mini waffles are a good pick, too...we are big fans of toast with nutella (a tree nut so possibly not as allergenic as peanut butter, if you are worried). good luck! these little buggers will keep you on your toes! |
