We need to buy a new (used) car to replace our 9-year old Mazda 5. I loved the concept of the Mazda 5 - a mini mini van - since we live close-in and commute to the city, but it is just too small. We're a family of 4 with kids in middle and elementary school; all but me will be over 6ft tall within the lifespan of whatever we buy. I'd lean toward a minivan but husband opposes. Our other car is a RAV4 with a billion miles. We really like that but I think we need something that will hold 6 if necessary and at least 5 big men reasonably comfortably. We're comfortable financially but obviously don't buy luxury brands (unless there is some compelling reason.) We'd like 4WD for winter weather.

Please recommend your good reliable SUV that isn't too crazy massive and seats 5-6 easily? Thanks in advance!

We love our Mazda Cx9! We usually just use the middle row and keep the third row folded down for storage, but it's nice to have that third row when we have extra riders.

I like my Subaru Forester but I don't know if it can hold five big men comfortably. Maybe you need something with a 3rd row seat? Here's a list of cars with 3rd row seating:

Wait, do you have 2 kids or 4? Why the need to seat 5-6 people?

If you are just a family of 4, why not a Subaru Legacy or Outback? 4wd all the time, and great rear legroom. I can sit 3 big people comfortably in the backseat of my Legacy, although I wouldn't want to go on a long, several-hour trip like that.

There is nothing out there like the Mazda 5. You could get a used one. For full size minivans we love the room in out Toyota sienna. You could easily fit 6 people in it and everyone would be comfortable. They are however bigger than the Mazda 5.

For suvs I would consider the Honda pilot or the new subaru ascent which will seat 7 and be out in 2018.
