| Anyone trying to decide whether to go private? |
| I'm pretty sure that most people in PG County that has this option thinks about it. You need to give more information if you want to have an actual discussion. Age of kid(s)? Where are they in school now? Which privates are you looking at? |
| Also do your kids have any learning issues? I have not found PGCPS to have great, accessible programs for GT/LD kids. |

My child is 14 and will be heading to 9th grade next year.
I've been wrestling with this question since last year in planning for her high school education. |
|
In response OP - I have contemplated. My kids start kindergarten next year and I have a family member who is high up in PG County education who advised I should look into private. My neighbor was telling me our neighborhood school is TAG but that's not saying much because most schools have TAG in PG (Pullout) here they select certain kids unlike a fully TAG school.
Haven't really narrowed down a school: Looking to do open houses at: St. Apostle Catholic School in Camp Springs, Browne Academy in Alexandria, VA and still searching. Heard not so great things about Rock Creek, Riverdale Baptist and Grace Brethren. I live in Clinton, MD. |

Yes, and there is a good chance that we will have to go private at some point. Right now PGCPS is working for us but options for MS and HS are pretty bleak in our area so we will need to cross our fingers for good luck in the charter/specialty school lottery and/or administrative transfer requests. IF none of those work out we will either go private or move.
Unfortunately, there is absolutely no way I would send my kid to our zoned MS and HS. |
| There are zero good middle or high schools in pg county. Everyone does charter or private. Even then, they are below a good county public school. |
I don't know that is true. Good things are happening at Hyattsville, Tasker, Kenmoor, Ogle, MLK and Greenbelt Middle to name a few off the top of my head. I kids at all of those middle schools so not EVERYONE does charter or private. I know folks with kids at Roosevelt and at Bowie High (not the Summit program) and they are happy there. All of these kids are white and middle class with educated parents if that matters. |
What area are you zoned for? We are zoned for Surratsville for High, Clinton Grove for Elementary and Decatur for Middle.... All a no! We were thinking about buying a house in Upper Marlboro but zoned for Melwood, Madison and Wise...not impressed |
Eleanor Roosevelt is Top Notch.... I'm sorry to say, that's where it ends.... |
Gholson for Middle and Bladensburg for High School. |
+1 |
Definitely wouldn’t do public |
Do you live in Cheverly, too? We're planning on either private or homeschooling in middle school. I'm still wary of the TAG program. Highland Park is a mess that I'm not interested in, so we'll be deciding on Kenmoor. |
Yes. Happy at Spellman and hoping for Kenmoor/College Park or CMIT for middle. But homeschooling is on the table given the great home school groups they have here. |
