I wonder if my dog can sense when one of the humans in the family are sick. Lately the dog has been acting pretty strange - cuddling up super close to our toddler. Normally, the dog tries to keep distance because the toddler can be a bit rough and startles the dog. However, ever since she got sick (fever, ear infection, then the illness just kept on on) the dog gets super close to her. Can he tell she is sick? And is therefore looking for a way to help? Has anyone noticed this too??
Yes, my dog does this when someone is sick or sad. I think they can sense when something is off and they try to comfort you.
|
Yes absolutely. Dogs can literally sniff out illness. They are pack animals who huddle together for comfort - and he is comforting your toddler.
Good thing he is not a wolf. When wolves smell illness they attack. |
OP. This made me laugh Yes, I agree with you! I love my dogs (we actually have 2 dogs, but one is much more emotional than the other). It is fascinating how much they understand.

Yes, dogs can in general. My dog? He doesn't have a clue, or if he can tell he doesn't care. He's sweet, but dumb.
I get migraines and my dog is always really well behaved and protective while I'm sick. He will just lay by my side and doesn't ask to go out or even ask for food like he normally does (I do take him out and feed him but not always on his exact schedule).
They know. When my husband had a serious injury requiring surgery our dog practically glued himself to my husband as he recovered.
Yes.
How sweet! Dogs are the best. Although my dog isn't very sensitive and doesn't seem to notice when anyone is sick.
Yes. My dog knew I was pregnant too. She was so sweet sleeping near my feet. Then when baby was born she slept near his pack and play. Now that he's older and pulls on her tail she sleeps dow stairs on the couch :-p
