Other Unlawful Absence - Do Not Call

Anonymous
I was checking my daughter attendance record on myMCPS and for October 2 it has written for every class

"Other Unlawful Absence - Do Not Call"

What does this mean? The phrase "Unlawful Absence" certainly sounds like the absence was unexcused. But who is not supposed to call? And why is it an *other* unlawful absence?

My daughter was sick that day and I called into the school recorded line to explain that. I really don't worry about one or a couple of unlawful absences, but I would like to know what the attendance message is supposed to mean.

Call you kids' guidance counselor and ask. At our MCPS HS, no call-ins or emails re: an absence: the kid needs to bring in a signed note within 3 days of returning to school or it's unexcused. If it's more than 3 days out, the student must have a note signed by a doctor.

My son has the same thing for a day that I called because he was out sick. I sent a note with him the day he went back, but he forgot to turn it in.

From Montgomery Blair website

The notation is there because you called rather than sending a note. Send a note excusing the absence and it should be fixed.

Hah, My DD still has unexcused absences on her record from the days she was at Outdoor Ed. I got truancy calls every day she was there. I assume the other 200 parents did too. I called a couple of times and they told me they would fix it but never did. I wouldn't trust that system at all.

Just wonder will these unlawful/unexcused absences have any impact on kids college/job applications ?

If these were meant to alert parents --- why bother to call or to write note explain anyway ?

To be clear, my kids middle school definitely wants the parents to telephone when the kids miss school. (They even have a special attendance line number.) But you are right that they still want a signed note when the student returns to school.

If your child accrues too many unexcused absences, student and parent will be called into school and counseled.

The reason to alert parents is because a kid may be skipping school without your knowledge, or because they didn't turn in the note you wrote within the required 3 days.

That is our school rule. Teacher with a cc to the attendance admin.

Contact the attendance secretary, not the counselor. The counselor has nothing to do with day-to-day attendance and will just forward your correspondence on to the attendance secretary.

This is what I do. Then there is always a record.

I was told it was used when you were traveling so they know you are out of school but ok so they don't call and check or that is how they did it when we go away and take off school. It should not be for doctor or sick and coded differently.

It simply means that you had called the school, they knew where your kid was, and for the school not to bother to call you.

Why on earth use the word "unlawful"?
