DH used my plastic measuring cup for liq plumber

He insists we can put it through the dishwasher and then use it again for food, I say no way you can't - who is right?

I would go with a new one.

I would definitely buy a new one,

Agree-- not worth the risk to use it for food again.

I would throw it in the trash or give it to him to keep with his tools. Liquid plumber is very abrasive -- if it can dissolve hair and gunk, imagine what else it can do.

Short pause to avoid saying the many killer interjections that come to mind.
Deep breath.
"DH, plumbing liquids are the most toxic chemicals in the house, they can cause DEATH if swallowed in small quantities or long-term adverse health effects (CANCER) if ingested in minute quantities, such as when run in the dishwasher."
Second pause.
"Please do not EVER use any food related item for non-culinary purposes."
Third pause.
"Tell me now which kitchen items you have taken for other uses previously without thinking to tell me."
Then throw them all away.

I never thought anyone could do such a thing...

And if it is run in the dishwasher, it will contaminate everything else...

Maybe he's related to my father-in-law, who used our kitchen sink to wash off the toilet plunger (which had seen plenty of toilet use!) he'd been using to unplug a drain in our garage. There is not enough bleach in this world to clean up after my father-in-law!

No way. You're right. Absolutely.

Ditch it.
Anonymous
ask him to use it to prepare his own food and you use the new clean one to prepare your food.
tell him to watch who will live longer and with no cancer.
that's the winner.

that is so typical! i'm surprised my DH hasn't tried that yet. there's a missing common sense button in many men's brains.

I think that would be different for a SAHD or DH who had more household responsibilities like meal prep.

I stopped using plastic measuring cups and went back to glass when I could never quite get the oil residue out of the plastic ones. They always felt a little greasy. I can't imagine trying to get a toxic chemical out of one! Toss it.

You might also want to remind your husband that one of the cardinal rules of child proofing is to never ever anything but food in bottles/jars/containers that are commonly associated with food. Not that you husband was going to store the Liquid Plumber in a measuring cup, but kids don't know the difference and will often taste anything they come across just to see what it is.

When I was three, I got to take an emergency trip to the hospital since I drank hair conditioner that my older sister mixed up and placed in a drinking glass in the shower.
