My white son attends a high school that is 90% URM. In looking at admittance rates in Naviance, GPA and test scores are lower for students at my son's high school than they are at a neighboring "whiter" high school. Should my son use his high school's naviance data as a guide or should he assume that he needs to perform better since he is unhooked?
Any guidance would be appreciated. I'm am too embarrassed to ask the school's excellent college counselor about this. |
| Just ask the excellent guidance counselor. I'd be very matter of fact, along the lines of "I liked the Naviance data I'm seeing for [whatever schools your kid is interested in], but of course, he doesn't have any hooks, unlike a lot of other kids. Do you have a sense of how other unhooked kids with a similar academic profile have fared in the past at these schools?" |

Your son should also use the common data sets from each college to get a broader perspective.

OP here. Thanks for the words but I don't feel comfortable asking such a question, hopefully another parent at the school will.

Why not? Your guidance counselor won't think you are racist for asking, if that is your concern. It would be the exact same question you would ask if all of your child's peers were recruited athletes, legacies, or from big donor families. If you don't have a hook, it changes the application strategy, and this is gust the sort of thing guidance counselors are trained to deal with. |
You will almost certainly have to get scores similar to the "whiter" school. |
| What is this "hooked" and "unhooked" I hear all the time here? I just assumed it meant that someone was a legacy or something like that, but it seems to mean something else or more in this thread. Silly me, we just apply to schools we're interested in. What am I missing? |
A hook is anything that makes it easier to get into a school. Athletics, legacy, minority (but not Asian, that's a disadvantage) etc. |
I do not think that minority will be an efective hook for Yvi's |
Being an underrepresented minority (black, Hispanic, Native American with documented tribal status) is a huge hook for ivies. If you are looking at schools in the Midwest, in some cases being Asian will be a slight hook as well, though it's more of disadvantage for East and West coast schools. |
Of course it is |
