What's making that noise?

There's a constant noise outside - is it crickets, cicadas, tree frogs . . . ??

I'm hearing crickets every night, the sound goes on and off quickly. But I've been seeing a few cicadas lately. Their noise if a more constant buzz.

Cicadas are the ear-shattering loud sound at dusk.

We have tons of crickets and cicadas. When I lived in the city, I would have to wear earplugs whenever i visited the suburbs because I was so used to traffic noise instead of this bug cacophony.

Sounds like DH is right, darn it! Must be cicadas, cause it sure is loud. I thought they only came once every 17 years.

Some come every year and some come every 17 years. When we get the 17 year locusts, you'll know it.

Some cicada's are on a 13 year or 17 year life cycle. Locust is just a term for a grasshopper. Two totally different bugs.

Locust is the swarming phase of short-horned grasshoppers

"Cicada bugs, also called the "17 year locust", Cicada insects or bugs, arrive by the millions, and can do damage to a variety of young trees and shrubs in your yard."

Oh, it's cicadas all right. I've seen them around for a couple weeks. One landed on the outside of my dining room screen during dinner, gag. My neighbor's cat has been bringing them in, double gag. I hate those things. I swear, I'm leaving town the next time the 17 year ones come around. I still have flashbacks from that summer -- blechhh.
