Do you always ask for more after first salary offer?

Curious. I have heard some people swear that they never accept the first salary offer for a new job. Others say at the very least it can't hurt. What are your thoughts? Do you ever see an initial offer and just accept?

If it's a fair offer and you know the salary range, yes. But I do agree that it can't hurt (within reason).

My friend just did that. It was a full 20% than she was hoping for. She said yes on the spot. Loves the job.
