Infertility Support and Discussion

On Friday morning, I got a pretty clear + at 12dpo with FMU.
On Saturday morning, I got another clear + (about as dark as Friday's) with SMU and also a + on a digital. This morning (14dpo), I used my last test with FMU expecting to see a blaring positive, but it is very faint. It's positive, but lighter than the previous two tests. Sat & Sun. tests were from the same box, a 2-pack of First Response Early Result. Friday was same test, different box. And the digital was First Response Gold Digital. I'm trying not to get nervous and hoping for someone to tell me it's ok that the line isn't darker today! (This is a natural cycle so no trigger or anything.) I realize it's out of my control. I'm calling my dr. for a beta on Monday, but I don't want to worry all day. I wish I hadn't even tested today b/c I was feeling great about Fri/Sat's tests. Now I've given myself something to stress about. I am praying everything is ok - we want this little peanut so much! So please reply if you have anything positive to say. |
| HPTs can vary based upon the amount of urine you have and how recently you drank water. I know it is hard to wait, but I'd suggest testing again tomorrow morning. Best of Luck! |
| OP - I'm sorry you're worried. It sounds like a good idea to get a beta tomorrow. I agree with PP - it could depend on how much water you drank before the last test and there are variances between tests (even those from the same package). The best thing is to get a beta tomorrow and then again on Wednesday and maybe even Friday to see how the levels are changing. I read somewhere that boxes that have multiple tests in them can detect different levels of hCG. So, maybe the test you used at 12 dpo was a bit more sensitive than the one you used for your last test (not as sensitive). If you had switched the order of which stick you used you likely wouldn't be worried (fainter line one day, then stronger line the next). I will try to see if I can find that info online. Good luck with your betas and get some rest. |

OP - it is PP again. I found what I was looking for. It is from this website (http://www.peeonastick.com/hptfaq.html#9). It is a Q and A.
Q: I took another test and the line is lighter. Does this mean anything? Should it get darker? A: Not necessarily. In general, the positive line will be darker when a greater amount of hCG is present in the urine, but not always. Some tests contain more or less dye (meaning there is just more or less color to "stick" to your hCG.) Some tests are more or less sensitive-- even 2 tests in the same box can be different. Also, your urine may have more or less hCG in it depending on what you ate or drank, or how long it's been since you last peed. Food itself does not cause false results, but can affect how much urine you have and how dilute it is. Eating salty chips and drinking caffeine all day will result in more concentrated pee, whereas gorging on watermelon and ginger ale will result in lots of very dilute pee. But an HPT is not meant to tell you "how" pregnant you are. It only tells you if you are pregnant or not. As long as there is a line in the results window, you are pregnant. Some women experiencing early miscarriages do notice their lines getting fainter or disappearing entirely, but even if your line gets fainter, it is not a guarantee that you are miscarrying, or that anything is wrong. See FAQ 21 for normal levels of hCG and how to properly measure it. |
| can you go get a blood test from your ob/gyn? |
|
Personally I would STOP testing and get a blood test. Seriously, throw away your HPTs. A positive is a positive, and continually retesting will only stress you out. I had a positive digital and when I heard my OB wouldn't see me until 8-10 weeks I felt the need to test again, after dinner one night. No line at all! I totally freaked out thinking I had a miscarriage. Then I realized it wasn't FMU and I'd drank a TON of water. I decided then and there, no more home tests. I don't need that kind of stress. I went to the OB a few weeks later and had a blood test, all is fine, and I am now at the end of my first trimester.

Thanks! I have put away the thermometer and the tests! Still a little worried but trying to keep busy & not think about it!
I will call tomorrow (Mon) to see when I can get a blood test - hopefully soon. I'm not sure whether to call my OB or Shady Grove (will post another thread on that). Thanks again guys! |
| if you are doing fertility treatments w/ SG then you should have a blood test at the end of the 2ww, right? so you should go there, no? |
Even if this is a natural cycle and you are being treated at Shady Grove, I would call there to get your beta. They will get you in right away and you'll have your results within a fe hours. They also may want you to start on supplemental progesterone. Good luck! |

OP again.
Yes, it is a natural cycle. All I have done at SG was the initial consult - I was supposed to go in for my day 3 bloodwork but then I got these positive tests! I called SG this morning and am going tomorrow (Tues) morning for a beta. I should have the results in the afternoon and I will post when I get them. In the meantime, prayers/wishes for a nice high beta are very welcome!

Praying for a high beta for you! Do you mind posting a follow-up?
Good luck. I see myself in your post...making myself CRAZY with OPKs and HPTs...it's awful. I'm so embarassed. |

Yes, I will definitely post the results when I get them tomorrow (IF I don't have a massive heart attack before then).
Unfortunately I also has some spotting & cramping today, so it is really not looking good. I'm bracing for bad news, but I'm going to cling to my last bit of hope until I get the results tomorrow afternoon. I'll let you all know what happens. |
| it could be implantation bleeding??? |
I don't know - I'm 15 dpo - isn't it a little late for implantation, esp with positive tests at 12dpo? But I'll take any explanation at this point! In any case, I think the spotting has stopped for the moment. It was a very little bit for a couple of hours this afternoon & I haven't seen any in the past several hours, so hopefully it will not start up again and the little bean still has a chance. Thanks for the support and I will check in tomorrow pm. |

I knew something wasn't right.
Beta was negative.
I'm not even spotting anymore, but I hope AF shows up soon so I can move on. Thx for the support. |
