Hooked on phonics or abc mouse

I am going to buy an educational app for my kindergartener to use for about forty minutes weekday mornings. His sister does quiet reading until the bus picks up (part of her homework), and so I was hoping to give him something similar to do. Right now he looks at picture books but get frustrated that no one has time to read to him. He has two younger siblings so hooked on phonics seemed like a good deal. He's a little behind as far as reading goes, it hasn't started clicking yet so he doesn't really understand how to sound put or decode words. I think that's appropriate for his age, but he gets frustrated and wants to be able to read on his own. He's done abc mouse at the library and likes it. Suggestions? If there's another option I'm missing please say so!

Reading Rainbow has a wonderful app called Skybrary. It doesn't teach reading, but kids can choose books and either read them themselves or have the narrator read the book to them. If they choose that option, the words light up as the narrator is reading.

OP, my DCs at 5 found ABC Mouse boring. Perhaps that's because they'd all been in preschool since age 2, but they already knew all the stuff that ABC Mouse taught. We had a six-month subscription and it never got used.

Oldest DC asked to learn to read at 4. We used Hooked on Phonics to help him. He loved it, and was reading at 3rd grade level after 3 months. Oldest DC is likely gifted.

We used the Hooked on Phonic books. DC didn't even like to listen to the CDs -- and didn't need them. I've not seen the Hooked on Phonics app or online stuff, but if it's pretty close to the print version it's probably a lot more helpful to your DC learning to read.

I like the preschool prep videos. Very calm and well-done, but teaches the digraph and blends quite effectively. Your younger ones can watch at the same time.

Both of my kids enjoyed ABC Mouse even though they were both in a good preschool too (to a comment from a PP). There are a bunch of level options (up through 1st grade or something). So you can play around and find the right level. Maybe start with the free trial.

There’s also an app for the Bob books that my kids liked.

There are some Free ones also.

We did the Monkey Preschool Lunchbox and DD likes getting the stickers.

My son hated ABC Mouse. We tried in preschool and kindergarten; same result. The BOB app he uses occasionally and enjoys. Endless Alphabet and Endless Numbers are fun for him. We have a number of 'educational' apps in a folder on our iPad that he can choose from so he doesn't get bored.

We have both Hooked on Phonics and ABCMouse on our tablets for our four year old and he loves HoP - and we've seen significant growth in his reading and he's having fun. Good luck!

Our favorite has been Loony Tunes Phonics. I hate abcmouse and their obsession with earning tickets.
