Once you start to color...you can't stop?

I want to color my hair a shade lighter (I have dark brown hair), but I'm afraid that once I start I will have to color my hair forever. Is this true? Is this also true for highlights?

Not true. If you do subtle color, there should be no problem. The problems happen when you really go away from your natural color and the new growth is really visible. And as for highlights, the colorist can use a method where they grow out and blend in.

Not true - you can always decide you've had enough with bleaching/ highlights, and a colorist can color your hair back to its original color.

I find I'm more nervous when I get a hair cut than highlights. A bad cut is semi-permanent, where bad highlights can be redone.

A friend of mine once received a coloring at a salon for a birthday present (to cover up her grey). She said it was one of the most expensive (to her) presents she ever received since she had to go back every 4-6 weeks to get it touched up. I think she switched to coloring at home.

My sister has brown hair. She got highlights for years. When she decided to return to her natural color, her colorist dyed her hair back to its natural color.

I think it depends on what you're coloring your hair for, highlights, gray, darker, etc. For highlighted hair, no problem in stopping. However, for gray hair, it's difficult, especially for someone who is completely gray, as I am (premature). It looks absolutely ridiculous to see gray roots, especially in a part, with hair that has color. So, for whatever reason your using color, you could discontinue coloring, with the exception of gray hair.
