John Kennedy Brwon Application

From daily mail:
Recently unearthed letters and documents written by Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis show just how dedicated she was to making sure John F. Kennedy Jr. graduated from Brown University.
The letters and documents, which include his application to the university, are up for auction by Gary Zimet of MomentsInTime.com and are expected to sell for an estimated $85,000.
'The letters show how involved Jackie was with his education and his tenure at Brown,' Zimmet told Page Six.
He added, 'The documents came from the estate of an administrator at Brown.'

How can these be sold? And aren't these university property? Why is is in the estate of a former employee?

It's not legal. It's just gross financial exploitation of the dead. The records are covered by the original Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (Buckley Amendment) of 1974. Brown cannot disclose them without permission, let alone sell them. But, the records were stolen by the employee/seller or Brown did not dispose of them properly. Both Brown and JFK Jr.'s estate could sue to stop the auction and claim ownership. Brown could be found in violation of FERPA and sanctioned if the estate files a complaint with the US Dept of Ed.

I hope they do. Wow, the chutzpah of some people to think that this is okay.
