Does anyone have any thoughts about Hyde in Gerogetown? Has anyone ever sent their child to this school? |
Hyde is the best elementary school in the city. |
How do you know? |
I'm bumping this because I would love to hear additional thoughts on Hyde and why this poster believes it is the best elementary school in DC. |
I just heard today that a friend-of-a-friend loves this school and that it has a great reading program. Having said that, I've lived in Georgetown for years, and I don't know anyone whose children attend.
I would love to hear more too. Also, I think the school had a banner up for a while that said it was maybe 10th in the city - which means PP is probably wrong about it being the best, at least as far as test scores are concerned. |
Actually, Hyde is the #1 ranked school, by test scores. Then Key in Palisades. |
Where do you find the rankings, I'd love to see it? |
Here are some parent reviews on Hyde:

Not exactly stellar parent reviews. Does anyone know where to find information about its ranking? I assume most of the kids come from outside G'town? |
Geez. Do a little research and you can find it all yourselves.
This link will being you to Hyde's results. http://webb.k12.dc.us/NCLB/dccas_reportcards.asp It's a pain - as you need to do a report for each school (can't run a comparison). Make sure you select "report card" to pull up the entire report. Results are up for 2007. The NW Current and the G'town Current also run a list each year when the results come out - pick up a copy next time. Or, give them a call for a back issue - I'm sure they won't mind. |
Why do the research ourselves when we have such a brilliant person like you to help us?
|
There are lots of different ways to use the data in these reports but unless you're being very creative I don't see any way that Hyde comes out #1. |
I live a few block from Hyde and I've never, ever heard it's number one.

My daughter attended Hyde a few years ago in Grades 1-5. Small school where everyone knows your kid. In most grades there is one class per grade. Had fantastic 1st, 3rd, and 5th grade teachers. Ms. Zucker (formerly Ms. Kimmel), the 5th grade teacher, is outstanding. The 2nd grade teacher was okay -- she left to finish her law degree after one year. The 4th grade teacher was not the best -- she did not return after one year.
There's been a new principal since we left so I don't know what the school is like now but we were happy with it. Definitely worth checking out. I wouldn't spend too much time obsessing about test scores. Ask to talk to other parents and check up on the track record of the teachers. Attend a PTA meeting. |
