What needs to be in a diaper bag?

Anonymous
I've got six weeks to go. What do I need to put in the diaper bag? Obviously diapers, wipes, anti-bacterial, changing pad.

Any suggestions are greatly appreciated. Thanks!

An extra change of clothes for baby (I keep mine in a small zip lock bag on the bottom of my bag and keep it in there all the time).

Maybe some diaper cream but you can just add it in if and when you need it

Burp cloth. Either a rag or napkins. (I found I was forever in need of one in those first few months.) Bags to put dirty diapers in - old Safeway bags or something like that.

A little toy or two.

Set aside a pocket for your things. I have a pocket in the diaper bag for a lipstick, mirror, keys, wallet, phone, so they're always in the same place.

Do yourself a favor and pack lightly, based on how long you'll be out. There is no need to bring 13 diapers, four outfits, two blankets, a handful of binkies, a couple rattles, your camera and a boppy on a quick trip to buy a gallon of milk. Your back will thank you.

Diapers, one or two changes of clothes, a couple ziplock or plastic bags and a small receiving blanket should do it. From there, you add in developmental/seasonal stuff as needed: sunscreen, hats, binky, small book or toy. Snacks and water for mama are also helpful. Inventory the bag and replenish low supplies right when you get home again and it'll always be ready to grab and go.

do you have to bring the bag at all if you're just running to get milk? (for me its a 2 minute drive). Or are there possibities of explosions or something where i should be prepared? (on my first so i have no idea)

For the quick little errands, I play it by ear. If it's nearing "poop time" I'm more likely to bring something than if we just had a new diaper. But I also ended up treating my diaper bag as a purse, so it was easy enough to toss it in the car and then grab out my wallet at the store.

I do keep a stash of clothes/diapers/wipes in my car. Nothing tremendous, nothing even nice, but it's there in case I need it and I don't need to tote around an entire outfit everywhere I go. I just have a small ziplock in the trunk with two diapers, a random outfit (DD uses DS's old baby clothes as her backup!) and a travel thing of wipes that i refill.

For really small trips, I have one of those Diapees & Wipees (http://01ede4a.netsolhost.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=blogcategory&id=19&Itemid=38) that I just throw in my bag. As the name implies, all they're for is a diaper or two and a travel thing of wipes.

Yes yes yes to the poster who said PACK LIGHT. Oh my God, I carried everything under the sun for the first few months. So unnecessary. But you really do think you need SO MUCH and you just don't. You'll get the hang of it.

I hate when that happens. Here's the link, if you were interested: http://01ede4a.netsolhost.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=blogcategory&id=19&Itemid=38

With my first: everything and the kitchen sink. My back is still complaining. With my second, a tiny bag with diapers and wipes and maybe an extra shirt. Number 3 got a stack of diapers in the car (sometimes)
