Applying for AAP in second semester during Grade 7. Currently in Grade 7 honors.

Anonymous
Hello all, Is it worth it to apply for AAP program during the second semester of seventh grade. My daughter came in from international school system and she is in honors now and had applied during the semester 1, but was rejected and I was wondering if it is worth it to apply again this time around during the second semester.

No. It's pointless for one year of Honors vs AAP in 3 classes. What do you hope to gain here?

No, in HS it won't matter, she will be able to take the same classes as those in AAP.

What is the difference between all honors classes(non-AAP kid) in 7th grade and being at an AAP center?

It varies from school to school. At our middle school, there were differences in the curriculum. In English, AAP read more complex literature than honors, and in science and social studies they did more projects and moved more quickly through the curriculum.

Math is done separately from the other subjects anyway, so being in AAP or honors doesn't matter for math.

Best wishes to you and your child, OP. She'll do fine in either.

AAP might matter in MS if you kid can pupil place from a weaker school into a strong Center. And definately matters if your kid is applying to TJ.

But presumably your kid would not change schools for 8th only. And the TJ die is cast, since the 7th grade classes aren’t on the transcript as AAP.

Also, it won’t change her math class.

Plus, your kid already applied and was turned down? You would have to retest in order to have something to resubmit and have a realistic chance of getting a different answer. I wouldn’t put a kid through more testing and get her hopes up again, when another no is also a possibility.

Let it go. As others have pointed out, the AAP designator disappears in high school anyway.

I didn't think it was possible to apply mid-year if you already applied during the summer.

DP. I read this an April 2018 applicatopm fot a 2018-2019 placement.

But that is an excellent point. If you already applied once in fall 2017 for this SY and were denied, you may not be able to apply again during this SY.

Op, this seems very, very Tiger momish. Can you tell us: (1) why you think your kid would be accepted when they were denied this fall/ Summer 2017? What new info do you have. And (2) why do you want to move an 8th grader into AAP? Is it TJ thing? Because this would be too late to help much. And should not affect HS Placements at all, SO???

Honestly, this situation does not make a lot of sense.
