Compacted Math Class Structure

Anonymous
I'm curious what the compacted math class structure is among the diff schools within MCPS. Does your school have a separate class for compacted kids? Do those kids rotate together for all of their classes? Do they have compacted kids with on level kids and just break out for small group instruction? Do they have compacted math at a separate school? Or is the structure something totally different?

It is just like a reading group. During math the teacher spends some time with each group.

At our school kids switch for math. There is 1 compacted class and 2 on grade level classes.

Compacted math kids are in their own class. That said, apparently our school is in Lake Wobegon because 4 out of the 5 classes are compacted.

Our compacted math is a different class with a different teacher. Slightly over half the grade is in compacted.

Sorry..my description is old. I forgot that now compacted math is now almost the norm again. There are full classes of kids taking it. I have to wonder how long it will circle back. My oldest child was in second grade taking 4th grade math when our ES announced no more acceleration for anyone in math. He is a sophomore in HS now.

They switch classrooms to go to math class with the teacher teaching compacted math.

At our school 2 of 3 classes are compacted math.

1 class out of 4 is compacted (kids switch for math class) but that class is much larger than the other 3.

Our school rotates two CM classrooms along with two classrooms participating in the new ELC program. My son was just complaining this morning that some of the kids in class can not keep up and wonders why they are there because last year "they were in the lower groups" while in regular 3rd grade math. Sad that he is frustrated with CM because they cannot move faster because MCPS feels the need to try and bolster their Math numbers at the cost of the children.

Our school does team teaching (two teachers per team). One teacher does the advanced group, the other teacher does the "regular" one. Kids switch back and forth for Math and ELA. Rest of the time is spent with their assigned homeroom teacher.

MCPS just can't win. If they don't accelerate lots of kids, that's bad. If they do accelerate lots of kids, that's bad too.

DP... if they accelerate a child who is not ready for it, then yes, it's bad. Why are they doing it? Parents complaining a lot that their kid can do it, even if they really can't? Administrators want to push URM kids who aren't ready into it to make the URM numbers look better? IDK. But, in either case, it's not helping the student.

No. The problem is that MCPS has decided to accelerate kids who should not be accelerated just to make their stats looks good and to pretend that they are closing the ‘achievement gap’.

Yes. Are you new to DCUM? When MCPS was doing a lot of accelerating, parents complained on DCUM that MCPS was pushing their kids. When MCPS was going to maybe stop accelerating, parents complained on DCUM that MCPS was holding back their kids. When MCPS went back to accelerating, but limited, parents complained on DCUM that MCPS was holding back their kids. Now MCPS is accelerating more, parents are complaining on DCUM that MCPS is pushing their kids and that MCPS is holding back their kids.

Now, why did you bring up "URM" kids?
