TPMS Mathcounts

Anonymous
DC is a 6th grader at TPMS. He said today he would take a tryout for Mathcounts club. We did not attend "back to school night", and I know nothing about this club. But if this needs a tryout -- it means there is a competition to get into. Does 6th grader stand a chance to get in considering competing with 7th/8th graders ? I believe the tryout is for all grades.

I don't know how it works at TPMS but mostly these types of clubs take roughly an equal number of kids from each year.

By taking roughly the same number, they will have 7th graders next year not only with high scores on the day of the tryout but also with experience.

Experience (knowing how to approach the problems) is more important than scores because as they take more math classes, scores can fluctuate.

OP here, thanks... it makes sense to take roughly equal amounts students from each grade. I hope they don't expect a 6 grader has experience on mathcounts -- I just heard this myself as a parent of high school, middle school and this newly 6th grader.

TPMS parent here. Yes, you have to tryout. The math club is on Tuesday after school. You should send an email to ask Ms. Manchester on the detail. There is a county middle school math team competition between the schools. tPMS usaully sends three teams plus a few alternates. Final mathcount team will be selected based on results from multiple math competition.

OP here, thanks for your information. DC did the tryout yesterday. I will certainly contact Ms Manchester if DC is invited into the club.

NP here. DS is in ninth grade and was in TPMS Mathcounts when he was there. They will definitely take some sixth graders. IIRC, the qualifying test is the same for all grades but the score one has to earn to qualify is adjusted. So for example, if the total possible is 50, the eighth-grade cutoff is 47, the seventh grade cutoff 44 and the sixth grade cutoff 40. (I'm making the numbers up but you get the idea.)

OP here, thanks for your information. DS was indeed invited. I guess from now on -- he will be participating mathcounts training every Tuesday after school for this school year. Next year, he will have to do the tryout again, fair game over all !
