high school abroad or in the USA

in terms of admission to college, what is preferable - a high school diploma from abroad (rigorous program, top school, in foreign language) or USA?

In general, it's much more difficult to get into American schools as an international student vs. a domestic student. Think of the amount of international students applying for any top 25 school - from Harvard to Duke. Even with top publics like UVA, they have to fill 2/3 of their class with Virginia residents, so admission for both out-of-state and especially international students is difficult. It's also tough if you're an international student seeking financial aid - colleges love full pay international students.

These are just tidbits off the top of my head. Anyone correct me if I'm wrong! I am unaware of preferences in less elite schools as well.
