Are you addicted to anything?

Anonymous
I gave this some thought after a horrible vacation with a friend. The problem was no coffee in the cabin that we rented. We had to drive miles the next day for coffee because she could not "manage" with out it. Needless to say it put a wrench in our plans.
I have a sister who takes way too many pain killers. She is a real drain to be around when her medication is wearing off.
I see where addictions get people messed up. I have never wanted to "have to have" anything. That is why I drink little caffeine, avoid all drugs, nicotine and so on.
It is not nice to live with people who can't cut themselves free of their habit.

I have a pretty big caffeine addiction, too. It may not be nice for my family, but there are too many constant demands on my energy and alertness to send breaking the habit to the top of my list.

Of course, I anticipate my need for caffeine and wouldn't be caught in the wilderness without any.

I grew up in a family of alcoholics (good times!) and of the three children, two don't drink at all and the third is a drunk - way, way worse than our parents. However, one of the two who doesn't drink is a compulsive shopper and liar. The other has a hard time with moderation - they have an 'all or nothing' personality.

coffee.

possibly the internet.

I kicked my addiction to nicotine after 20+ years!

The internet, esp. forums like this.

Seriously. It is a huge distraction at work. It affects my concentration and I can't focus on projects for any length of time without giving myself "breaks" to get online to check on some nonsense or another on an online forum like this one. And I find it's mostly with anonymous or semi-anonymous communications. I don't have an addiction to Facebook, where I actually know the people I'm communicating with.

I have started to force myself to cut back, but it is a challenge. It's hard to understand - it's obviously filling some need that is not being met in "real life."

Coffee, without a doubt. I would have been like your friend in the cabin, except that like a PP, there is no way I would have ended up without it--I would have brought a small coffee-maker and coffee with me!

Me too. I always bring coffee and french press on my travels. My compromise is bringing ground coffee so I don't have to bring the grinder too.
