Congress poised to come down hard on tech companies

Fascinating scoop by Mike Allen at Axios. Apparently, both parties are aiming to crack down on major tech companies in the name of national security.

In addition, the GOP thinks this is something they can run on in 2018 by portraying tech companies as beholden to "open borders" and "liberal policies"

How come Congress isn't similarly cracking down on the almost criminally negligent (actually maybe it is) poor cybersecurity by Experian?

I am a liberal who works in tech, and I have no problem with acknowledging that the big tech companies (where I refuse to work) need to be reigned in. I am doubtful that Congress has the ability to do so in the best interests of the average American...but stranger things have happened. But the Experian hack is truly ridiculous, and they seem to be terrible actors in all this.

You may have noticed that only Dems seem to care about holding big businesses accountable. I haven't heard much from Rs about the Experian hack or the Wells Fargo scandal. Actually, seems like Rs, lead by Trump, want to remove regulation to make it easier for big businesses to cheat consumers.

So, I think Rs are hypocrites here. The Experian hack should be a national security concern.

Along with it having a potentially crippling impact on our financial systems and economy.

Weren't they giddy about the work done by Cambridge Analytica? Isn't their whole thing to collect a massive database on every voter in America? And didn't one of the RNC contractors leave data on every one of us on an unsecured Amazon server, 25 terabytes of data? Oh yeah, they did.

Perhaps they could start with those two.

And it's also believed that Cambridge Analytica got some of its data via extremely shady sources, i.e Russian hackers.

Salaries have been flat since 2000. Are you on crack or just hiding under a rock?

Millions of older IT workers have been replaced by young, cheaper guest workers.
