I am no conservative, but this strikes me not an appropriate use of taxpayer money. Not only that, but my understanding is that these proceedings are not criminal courts so there is no right to a public defender.

I pay a lot in taxes to Arlington, and I'm okay with this. I have zero faith that this administration will comply with the law when it comes to immigration proceedings, so I'm glad there will be more resources available to hold them accountable.

Also, the money isn't just for illegal immigrants, it's for immigrants of any legal status facing possible deportation.

I don't think this is an appropriate use of county funds.

It's obvious that Arlington County taxes are too high and they have an extra $100,000 to waste.

I would be okay with this if it was clear it was to assist people with legal papers navigate a system that they do not fully understand or are intimidated by. But you should have to show the papers in order to be eligible for the services.

Help me understand why this makes it better? Why would legal or documented or whatever you want to call it immigrants be facing deportation? I don't think it is because of the stellar contributions they are making to the community.

There are plenty of resources for people who need help in this situation. This is something that should be addressed by private non-profits. Not the government.

Wrong. According to the article and links the CB particularly emphasized that the legal help is for people here illegally, and to pursue options to legalize their status, or make plans when faced with deportation proceedings.

From the article:

“Ten years ago this month, the County Board approved a resolution supporting Arlington’s newcomers....”

So, we’re calling them “newcomers” now?

I'd actually be in favor of this. Illegal immigrants often have relatives who are here legally or are citizens, including children. Deportation can cause real disruption, and spending some money to endure that children are properly provided for--getting guardianship papers in order, etc. I'd also be in favor of using money to ensure that people's rights aren't violated--there are cases of ICE deporting citizens or LPRs.

I'm actually in favor of sanctuary cities, because I think that local police should not be doing the federal government's job for them, and communities are safer if victims and witnesses are willing to come forward and cooperate with law enforcement. But I'm somewhat skeptical of using money to actively prevent deportation, absent some special circumstances.

Anybody think that when word gets out, more illegal aliens will come to the area in order to get their free representation?
By making it easier for these folks to stay, you are encouraging the illegal behavior.

This makes me livid. Especially when I see this kind of crime result from letting illegal immigrants into public schools. Horrifying.
