FINALLY a great teacher!

Well my kid has always hated school. He has anxiety and puts a lot of pressure on himself. He's had several teachers who have caused his anxiety to get worse and made him really hate school. Not all of them were bad, he's had some mediocre and one or two good teachers. This year is different. This year he loves his teacher. He comes home talking so enthusiastically about his teacher and his day. He actually said he likes school this year. Every day he tells me what his teacher said and what his teacher did and how nice his teacher is. I'm so happy. It's heart breaking when your kid is miserable at school. It feels great when your kid is happy at school.

That's great! I hope it continues all year.

If it continues through the year, nominate the teacher for an award. I did that. We've had some doozies so when a good one comes around...I write to the principal, nominator awards, write long letters of gratitude...A good teacher can be life-changing.

Can you identify what factors make this teacher such a good math? If so, request those things next year as well.

Wow! Sometimes you catch a break. Your son sounds like he is still in elementary school. I would want the teacher to know what a positive effect he/she is having on your son. Everyone can use some positive feedback. Anxiety is such a tough state of mind for the person and their family. So glad to hear that he is happy. My prayers are with you for his growth in self confidence.

This is so nice, thank you! He's in 6th grade, last year of elementary school. I will definitely let the teacher know. I emailed the principal in the past when I was happy with the teacher. (Never complained about the bad ones!).

The things that make him a good match? This teacher is calm, has a sense of humor, treats the kids like kids, but encourages them to advocate for themselves (meaning doesn't yell at them for making mistakes but tells them to come to him with problems rather than waiting until the problem gets bigger), allows the kids to enjoy learning and school, talks about himself so that the kids feel like they can get to know him, shows the kids fun stuff while they are learning which I think helps them remember stuff better, and the teacher is just very laid back, but in control. The teacher is just so nice to the kids, but still has excellent classroom management skills, so they are relaxed and able to learn.

I will absolutely nominate this teacher. I hope other parents will too.

Thanks everyone, I hope you all have a great year too.

Not the pp you're responding to but I just wanted to chime in and say this is all so wonderful!

Hi, Op

Just wanted to chime in that you should email the teacher and principal. My DH just became a teacher and a parent recently wrote him a very nice note about how her kid loved his class and how it has improved their home life. It made my DH's day! He changed careers and has worked very hard so far to get where he is. He loves working with the kids.

I'm happy for you. However, if most of the teachers have been crappy, i'm afraid it might be that your son needs an attitude adjustment.

I'm curious to know why you haven't complained about the bad teachers.

OP, I would wait 2 more months to see if the teacher is still that way. My DC had a teacher who started the year pretending to be super nice, calm and caring just to be nominated. Winds change right before winter brake and she became a huracan.

Just to be nominated for what?

Any chance she was a nice, calm, caring person who became overwhelmed at that time of the year? Maybe the kids were a bit more antsier too given it was close to winter break?

I do agree she should give it a bit more time. But if her DC has never been off to a great start like this before, I can understand her optimistic joy.
