| What suburbs would you look at if you had a job in the financial district and wanted to keep commute reasonable? Budget of approximately $2 million. Good schools and nice commmunity very important. TIA! |

I live in Darien, CT. I have only lived here a couple months so I can't say too much about it, but I do love it so far. The people have been really friendly and nice. I like that it's a small town. The schools have been amazing. They are very organized. They are lots of ways to meet people here like newcomers clubs and the schools have events for new families. The town beaches and parks are beautiful.
For 2 million I have an old home (I wanted an old home) and a large yard and a pool. The train station is not far from our house. We can walk, but usually drive. I like having the walking option. The commute to grand central is a little less than an hour. Obviously downtown would be longer. Most people I have talked to seem to go in very early (5ish train) and come home early. My husband does not have a regular commute to the city, but he does have to travel often. I think it's a wonderful community and place to live so far. You can definitely find a place with a shorter commute if that is important to you. |

| Fair Haven, NJ (near the beach) or Ridgewood NJ with your budget. Fair Haven has the ferry for commuting and Ridgewood has the train. Both good school systems and small town communities. |

Probably NJ if you're commuting to the financial district. If you want to go to Westchester, I'd look at Bronxville. There's also Scarsdale, but the schools are intense.
Watch out in NY for school district vs zip code. Places can have one town name for an address, but be in a different town for schools. The school districts are tiny compared to here, which has upsides and downsides. Also check city-data.com forums for advice. |
