Would you miss 2-3 days of school for vacation?

Anonymous
DC just started middle school. We have been trying to take the kids to Universal and it would be much more affordable if we went during an off-season time, like the week before thanksgiving. Would it be a big deal to miss a few days? One part of me says no, DC is a good student and family vacations are important, while the other part is worried about missing days of 6th for vacation.

I'd take a trip during school if my children would learn more on the trip.

Universal? No.

But I agree that family time is important and you should do what you want.

You're teaching them a bad lesson - cheaper vacation to an amusement park is more important than schooling.
Also, the title says 2-3 days -- there's a difference between 2 days and three days.
Of course, with some of the kids I've seen it really wont make a bit of difference one way or the other.

Your child needs to check with all his teachers re:homework. It would be great if he could do the work before you leave (even if he hasn't had the actual lesson, it's not that hard), and then make-up any test he missed after you return.

Totally. We are doing it the first week of December. Family time is just as important or more important than school (or job) time. That is the exact lesson I want my kids to learn.

I let my kids miss 1 day in the Fall and 1 day in the Spring if they plan something interesting.

Yes. I would miss 2-3 days to spend time as a family especially if that is the only vacation we will have all Fall/Winter/Spring.

It is best the week after Thanksgiving BTW.

People who never let their kids miss school for fun are not teaching kids real life. I miss work for fun all the time. I also realize that sometimes when I get back I am swamped. It teaches kids to manage their work/life balance.

OP - It's not really a question of cheaper vs. more expensive vacation, it's about being able to go now vs. not being able to go until they're too old to enjoy.

What are you calling schooling?

If I could afford it, I would take my kids to Harry Potter world in a heartbeat during the school year. They are in middle and elementary school. Now is the time.
My parents and I are hoping to organize a spring-time vacation to tour the canyons. If there are snow days to make up over spring break, we might miss a few days of school. Too bad.
We place the highest possible value on education, and my kids always have top grades. "Schooling" is a different matter.

Never let your schooling get in the way of your education.

Education includes: learning how important family time is, learning how much a change of scenery can help your spirit, and learning what you can get away with.

right. during vacation. Many, many vacation days plus summer. Let's make no mistake what OP is saying. Really, I doubt it's going to make much difference.

This is not about "family time." There is plenty of time for that.

Elementry School: yes. Middle and High School, workload is too large. No

No. There are SO MANY faculty work days and random days off, that you should be able to find a time. If they have a Friday off, plan for them to miss Thursday and book your flight to Florida on Wednesday night. You'll wake up there and be ready to start your day.

My 12 year old son is going to Tokyo with my husband in Nov. It's during the week when they have 2 days off (APS), so he will miss three days of school. He knows he has to check his iPad and plan with his teachers before he leaves. It will be a great experience for him and he's an excellent student, so I am sure he will be fine.
