Back in my day, alternative radio and local music shows introduced me to new music. Before that, it was good old radio airplay. Now, with the mp3 revolution, I have no idea how to figure out what to buy and listen to. Please help! I'm tired of listen to the same old music from college, but don't know where to start.
I love singer songwriters, alt rock, country, folk, chicksingers and feminist music. Any advice? |

Pandora.com
type in someone you like and it will select like artists |
| Good question--I have been listening to the Classic Alternative station on the Comcast music channel and loving it. Maybe the non classic channel would be a place to start? |
My teen step-daughter.
Otherwise, it's Itunes for me. I liked that "back in the day song" on a McDonald's commercial, and downloaded that from Itunes (it's by Know How). Try these, if you haven't already: Yael Naim: New Soul Imogen Heap: Hide and Seek Duffy: Mercy Poe: Angry Johnny Katy Perry: Hot and Cold Beth Hart: (anything) Pink: I Don't Believe You Gus Gus: Is Jesus Your Pal Lily Allen: Smile |

1. I use iTunes to look up songs I know I like see what else they suggest. I also look at the most popular downloads, find one I like and see what else they suggest if you like that song.
2. I use this webite: http://www.fiql.com/ to look up songs I like and see what other songs people put it with in their playlists. |
| One word...Pandora.com |

Pandora's pretty cool. Also check out allmusic.com. It's sort of encyclopedic. But it also lists similar artists, etc.

| Satellite Radio. There are some great alternative stations. |
| wxpn is the station out of u penn in philly. they play AWESOME music, like the kind you describe. they stream live over the internet and have a really comprehensive website. it's the thing i miss most about my hometown, i miss it more than cheesesteaks. (DC radio SUCKS!). |
| Not the OP, but I could have written that post. I've spent all morning on Pandora.com, and I love it! Exactly what my DH and I have been looking for--I can't wait to show him tonight. |

I'm old, too!
I go on Youtube and fart around. I try new stuff. Sometimes I really find a band I like, and if I find myself watching the Youtube version of whatever it is over and over, I buy the tune or album on iTunes. |
You are so right. I miss WXPN desperately. Best radio station I've ever found. Great place to find new music, or be reminded of great stuff you'd forgotten. |
