Bars of soap, last Amy of toothpaste ...worth it to you to get the last amount out?

Anonymous
If your soap is a nub, do you chuck it or smush it onto a new bar? Do you squeeze out as much toothpaste as you can or get towards the end and then Discard the tube?

I generally try to get the last amount out of all containers (including cutting some open to access the inner bottle for things like sunblock).

Typical or overly thrifty?

If you do it just for yourself and don't insist that everyone in the family partcipate, then you're good.

My husband tortures us over these little things (and other things besides, such as water usage, keeping only one light on in the room you're in, doing things this way not that way, etc). It goes beyond thriftiness into territory I don't even have a word for. OCD, maybe? Control-freakiness, definitely, but not enough.

I do all these things. I was raised by depression era parents and they wasted nothing. Some of my siblings have gone to the other extreme, but I am extremely frugal. Plus the more use you get out of a product, the easier it is on the earth. Less waste and a win win situation. How about you OP?

Smush with the new bar, squeeze out the last bit. My parents were very poor growing up (as in, my mother left school at 14 so she could work and help support her family), so the idea of not wasting things is ingrained in me. Dh was raised differently, and does somethings that drives me nuts, but we manage.

I didn't grow up poor but I def do this. I even cut the lotion bottle to make sure I get the last little bit. My husband thinks I'm insane but I think it just makes sense and I actually enjoy getting my money's worth, even if we're down to pennies worth of product at that point. Why waste? It's there, just takes a bit of effort to get to it

I buy products I really love, so yeah I do use them up 100%. I throw out the soap when there's just a sliver though.

I use it til its finishing but no I don't freaking cut them open or twist until every sliver comes out.

This is the way I am. My husband wouldn't do it either, but doesn't mind if I do it. I also take the shampoo, etc. from hotels with us to use up at home as well. Why not? I paid for it and it is better for the earth since they would just dispose of it.

This is great. Husband and I have same approach so it works for us. My sister in law gets annoyed with my brother due to below - but they can joke about it- but because he does not go too overboard and can see how annoying he is. Wing before it turns controlling. Thanks for articulating the distinction.

I not only do this, I also use hotel soap so I don't have to buy soap. But I don't ride anyone in the house to be like this - I realize it is a little silly. I just have them give me the toothpaste tube when its at the end.

Cutting open something like sunblock takes about 30 seconds. Inside is about 2-3 more applications. I also unscrew and shake out the remaining conditioner and use that, too. I don't expect my husband to do it, but I will use it up if he doesn't want to. What's the big deal? (I won't do it for things that are super messy like toothpaste but for most things I will.)

My bottle of Aveeno lasts an extra week if I open it!

We both grew up poor and are still just barely MC by the skin of our teeth, so it's pretty important to us to limit waste. I will cut open lotion tubes. I add water to bottles of shampoo, laundry detergent, and dish soap to use the last drops. I used to have a little net bag for soap nubs. I bought it in an Amish market and it worked great.

I do this because I like to save money and it's better for the environment not to be wasteful. I spent my 20's broke as hell but at 30, I not have money, but I live like I'm still broke.
