Is is illegal for a job to specify a candidate's sex?

As in candidate must be male?

Yes. But you can require someone to have a certain physical strength, like must be able to lift 50 lbs.

It's permitted for certain jobs, like prison jobs or maybe for certain positions with TSA, if there is a bona fide reason. Like if TSA needs a female agent for same-sex pat-downs. Or if you need men to work with men in prison. It's illegal for your run of the mill white and blue collar jobs.

What's the job, OP?

No. Prisons and social worker agencies can specify specific genders.

It's a lab position working in a doctor's office.

Why do you prefer a male employee?.

Interesting. I would think most of the time this would not be permitted.

A doctor in our town that specializes in male issues advertises an all-male staff. So there must be some way to do it.

I don't. It was a position I was interested in applying to until I got down to the bullet point about male candidate only.

He probably hires all males, but doesn't restrict his applicant pool.

You can specify a gender if there is a bona fide reason to do so. It can't be a reason based in stereotypes (e.g., women aren't strong enough to life heavy things, or men shouldn't work with children), but it's totally legitimate to have gender specifications in hiring if it's something like a medical practice where the patients have overwhelmingly expressed a preference for one gender nurse when the nurse is involved with intimate procedures.

It's not advertised as that type of clinic.
