Do you support megachurch/prosperity churches and pastors?

If you support the likes of Joel Osteen, Eddie Long, etc... please help me understand why. To me they are everything Jesus stood against, and I cannot understand who continues to support the likes of these types, and why.

No one? Someone has to support them, to get the kind of following/wealth they have.

You know you're going to hell, right?

If McLean Bible Church is an example, I HATE them. They teach intolerance to the Jews and propagate anti-Semitic stereotypes. I personally have seen people get involved with them, and their attitude toward me moves from acceptance, to disrespect, to outright disdain. People who used to tell me how much they like me sneered in my face when I told them I didn't want to go to their church so "things would be explained to me."

Not a fan of McLean. But it sounds like they encourage proselytizing to all non-believers rather than anti-semitism per se.

I always found it odd that the pastor of MBC, Lon Solomon, was raised Jewish.

Generally speaking, yes....but they're after the Jews more than anyone. I had a "well-meaning" MBC member send me a video of one of Lon's sermons, and my curiosity got the better of me and I opened it. Turned it off within a couple of minutes, but that was long enough to hear some pretty bad things about the Jews. The ironic thing is that the person who sent it to me was ignorant of how anti-Semitic is was; she said she did it because she "loves me" and wants G-d "to approve" of me (which if course means leaving Judaism).

He also was a drug dealer. If you look into the history of many of these "born-again" types, it's a fairly common pattern.

I was driving the other Sunday and overheard a mega-church sermon. It was all about how "Jews will tell you they're the children of Abraham but they are actiually the children of the Devil."

What radio station do you listen to?!

This type of thinking isn't a megachurch phenomenon. It's a fundamentalist phenomenon, and even then, not all fundamentalists buy into it.

The "Jews killed Jesus" thinking is actively discouraged in mainline Christian churches, the Catholic Church today, and most other churches. It's viewed as a relic of an intolerant past that the vast majority of today's Christians would eschew.

I have no idea what ststion it was. I was scanning around, and stopped on it out of morbid curiosity. (Like looking at a car crash.) I'm here in the DC area, though, and it was broadcast here.

I'm glad to be reminded that the "Jews killed Jesus" line of thinking is eschewed by mainstream Christians. I knew that, of course, but sometimes I run into the fundamentalist type, or sub-type, and get thrown for a loop. There are a lot of them in NoVa, and I believe it's from the MBC. Not positive though.

I'm Christian and my husband is Jewish. One of my neighbors was a MBC member and she tried to convince my DH to listen to the story of Lon, listen to his sermons, etc so that my DH might connect with him and convert.
I guess Lon grew up Jewish?
Anyway it is incredibly disrespectful and rude to tell a Jew they need to convert. Especially since as Christians we are a younger faith and sprouted from the Jewish faith.
I'm not sure how anyone can follow the teachings of Joel Osteen and claim to understand Jesus at the same time.

They are not for me. But, if they help meet the needs of people, that's okay.

Not a sermon, just a thought. Give me thoauds of dollars a year and I won't spend more than 10% of it on ministry and the rest will go into my pocket.

These types of places make me sick.

And he won't even disclose his salary. What a scam! I know someone who is contributing $25,000 a year (10%) of his income to that place.

They really do.

If you're in becoming a leader (religious or otherwise) for yourself and so much personal gain... I just do not understand how so many people do not see the scam/gimmick - and PAY to support the incredibly wealthy lifestyle of the megachurch/prosperity types.

It's antithetical to Jesus and his mission. It's antithetical to the major teachings of just about every religion. But still... they thrive.
