Decision and Move-in Happiness

Anonymous
Have been reading this forum over the years as my DC moved through high school, began to research colleges and went through the visits, application and decision processes. Along with the more in-depth info from College Confidential, always found this forum helpful in better understanding the lay of land, even if topics not directly relevant. So just wanted to share how my DC's experience turned out in case it is helpful to anyone. My DC ended up at NYU/Tisch with a significant Tisch scholarship. Plus, she also got other local scholarships that NYU allowed her to "stack" so the final cost of attendance is well below our modest college budget. When she started the process, never imagined that this would end up being the case. She also had acceptances that were financial and admission safeties and matches that she liked very much, but NYU, with the top ranked program in her major among her acceptances, was less expensive than her second and third choices. Again, this goes against the conventional wisdom on the street because of NYU's high cost and reputation as being stingy with aid. But they were not in my DC's case and it was a huge surprise. I know that many people have the opposite experience, but wanted to share this since it can actually happen. As it is only day one of orientation, can't say more about how it will go in the end, but the move in process yesterday was very smooth. Only other thing that might be helpful for another family is that DC has had very good experiences, both pre and post acceptance, with the staff in the disabilities office and comparable staff in the Department. They have exceeded expectations. Again, NYU is not a school known for its disability services, but they have been incredibly helpful to date. My DC has 3 types of disabilities, complex, but not severe. However, together they require multiple levels of accommodations -- at class, dorm type and location, scheduling and dining hall levels. The documentation required was a little intense, but once completed, she was approved for all needed accommodations, including one that they will provide that is expensive for them. She was assigned a senior staff member at the disabilities office who is a decision-maker, so that may also be why process has gone well and been an empowering/confidence-building one for my DC. Please no trashing of NYU. Didn't post to start that conversation again, but rather, in case it is helpful, to share one student's experience in being able to end up at her #1 choice when it turned out to be affordable and could accommodate her disabilities. Because of all of this and the fit for her, it was easier leaving her in NY yesterday than I ever imagined it would be.

How wonderful for your daughter and family. Kudos to NYU for making accommodations to help your daughter succeed.

OP thanks for posting this. It is interesting to hear a detailed positive account when there are so many nay sayers on this board. Thank you and I hope your DD's first year goes fantastically for her (and you).

That is terrific to hear. Wonderful for your daughter to be at her top choice with aid, and for you to know that she's in such a good situation.

OP, where did your dd go to HS (if you don't mind saying, generally, maybe just say school area and public or private) and what were her grade point average and SAT scores?

I wish you used paragraphs. A huge block of text is off-putting.
