Club soccer fields in DC area

Anonymous
I'm new to the area and my son played in a local tournament in VA a few weeks ago. I was shocked to see the fields owned by the host club, SYA (somewhere in the woods in fairfax, va). Our club rents fields from the county and they are nice, but nothing like this club's facilities. Not the garbage turf fields, it was nice Bermuda grass fields. Do most the clubs in the area own their own fields? I'm a nerd about the economics of how a non-profit club can afford owning/maintaining the property. Where we came from, you would be lucky to have full grass coverage.

Some of the big clubs in the area own their own fields. We play Loudoun and they have a large facility with turf fields. It's nice to not have to argue with the adults playing pick up soccer on a sunday morning.

Fredericksburg and MD sportsplex facilities are really nice, but don't think those are club owned.

Most of the clubs use existing facilities, which they often share with schools or parks. Often part of the arrangement is that the club pays for all or part of a the turf field installation. Bethesda Soccer uses an MCPS field that they paid for. I think Potomac Soccer was going to do the same thing. McLean Soccer uses a park field for practices that they put the turf on, and several other local park fields for games.

The facility we have been most impressed with is Evergreen in Loudoun county. It's somehow connected with a church, but it's a really nice facility.

Some clubs partner with high schools for field costs and share space

The Fredericksburg facility is half owned by the club and VYSA owns the other half of the fields. I think they make a lot of money renting it to major tournaments, WAGS, Jeff cup, Regionals, etc. They might be non profits but they are in the business of making money.

The two halves are separate facilities. VYSA is not making money on their fields -- all the fees they charge for rentals and their other programs are going in to paying off the installation costs.
