We’ve been a Tuckahoe family for several years, and it seems that there has been a whole lot of staff turnover this year. There appears to be about a dozen teachers who quit this year, including many of the school’s most respected and admired teachers.
I know that staff turnover is something that always happens, and some of these teachers individually have solid reasons for leaving (switching to other positions within APS, etc.), but it just seems extreme this year. And last year, the general school atmosphere seemed more stressful than in previous years, for the kids and seemingly teachers as well. Does anyone know if there’s an overarching problem with the school that is driving teachers away? I haven’t had many direct interactions with Principal Mitch Pascal, so I don’t know if it’s something about his leadership, or whether other Arlington Elementary schools are facing a similar issue this year. Just curious if anyone have any ideas about this? |
| Did they quit at the end of last year? Or are they quitting now right before school opens? |
I'm aware of several teachers who shared with parents in advance that they were not returning for this coming school year, but in looking at the school's website now, there's a lot more "New Teacher TBD" listings on the individual grade listings... many more than we would have guessed, plus I've heard recently of another teacher who is not returning whose name still does appear on the website. |
| Huh. Other than one teacher moving to middle school, I'm only aware of retirements and teachers moving out of the area. In fact, 2 of the TBD teachers are coming BACK to Tuckahoe. So I think you are off base. I have two kids there & it was not remotely stressful there for them. Love the reduction in homework. |
| I see 4 TBD hires in K-5 on the website. 2 moved to Colorado and the west coast, one retired, and 1 went to HB. Perfectly normal. Unless a bunch of specials left that we don't know about, this post is way off base. |
