In public school, your child will be eligible for ELL (english language learners) services. If you consider private school, you should make sure they have experience working with kids who are not fluent in English.

How old is your child? The pros/cons for public and private schools are different at elementary vs high school.

Hate public schools.Send your dd to a Catholic school next year.
Welcome to America.

The classes are big. For one of my kids, that was fine. For one it was too overwhelming and she got lost in the shuffle.

Op you may want to move out of Alexandria to Maclean ,
Vienna , burke, Arlington or fairfax or falls church where the schools are better . use schooldigger.com or greatschools.org to check out some of the schools , a rating of 8 or higher . And talk to your friends , colleagues who have first hand experience with schools here to get a better idea of places that can help your child . All the best

Why is your DH super upset? Public schools work for a lot of children, most, really.

Look, I am a foreigner whose child grew up in the US and goes to a 6 out of 10 public school. It's not the end of the world, let me tell you!
He gets a lot of free enrichment because the school has extra money to take care of the high needs population. He does get bored at times, but even the best schools have a pretty easy curriculum, in elementary I mean.
Just calm down and start at your local school. If it doesn't work out, start looking into options.
Yes the classes are too large, the program too easy, and too much emphasis on discipline. But it's ok.
