Does your MCPS elementary school post class lists or send out postcards?

Our elementary school, Somerset, used to post who was in what class a week or two before school started. It was really fun to see who DC'a teacher was and who was in their class. There was a definite party atmosphere outside the school as families clustered around to see who was where. The principal decided to send out postcards this year in lieu of posting the lists. I don't hate her like many do, but I think she makes decisions based on what will result in the least amount of work and complaining for her, rather than thinking of the school community. I bet she had too many immediate requests for student transfers and didn't want to deal with it anymore. Boo. How do other ES find out teacher placement?

Lists on the classroom doors (and on the doors you go in if you're a bus rider) posted on the afternoon of the school open house, the last weekday before the first day of school. Or you can call the office during the open house and ask.

Like you, I'm guessing that the Somerset principal changed the policy because she didn't want to have to deal with parent complaints about Larla being in this class vs. that class. Quite correctly, in my opinion. I'm also guessing that the Somerset ES school community will be able to withstand this change in policy (and if not, perhaps the Somerset ES Foundation can help).

I'm amazed that they had the class lists that early. Rosemary Hills and North Chevy Chase sent out postcards, but they always came two days before school started.

Our school posts lists and it's a nice atmosphere as well.

But that said, postcards are more fair: everyone gets them at the same time. This year my kid is at grandma camp that week because I have to work a lot and DH is out of town: I feel weird going to school to scan the lists alone. I sure wish we had postcards. Plus, the mail is so exciting for the kids! The crowds at school are festive but annoying, as parents hog the viewing space to compare notes and some kids just take too long or take up too much space. Again, not fair.

Rosemary Hills - postcard that arrives the day before the open house where you can meet the teacher. This year, postcard arrives Thursday before Labor Day, open house is Friday before Labor Day, and school starts the day after Labor Day.

Ditto at Greenwood.

Postcards for us. But I agree that it would be nice to have lists posted also!

Our postcards are send out this week anyway so people could still complain if they wanted to. Why not post a list.

We *might* get a postcard, but often we don't even get that courtesy.

This year we are getting emails apparently, on the Thursday before school starts. On the Friday is an open house and lists posted on school doors (in case you didn't get the email / want to see who else is in your kids class)

Last year we got emails a half hour before our scheduled sneak peak to meet the teacher. It was three separate emails that each contained 2-3 classes for our grade. We had to scan each class list until we found our child's name. Unfortunately, the last email wouldn't load on my cell phone so we had to ask a volunteer with a clipboard at the open house to look up our class assignment, along with at least a dozen other families. I'd prefer a postcard a few days in advance to that chaos.

At my child's school, we don't find out until Open House. I wish they would send a postcard or email ahead of time.

4:00 pm the day before the open house lists get posted. Two weeks before school starts you can go to a fund raiser and find out. Fund raiser has been at Chik Fila from 5-8 pm. No lists - you get a card with the teachers name so you only find out if you go.

They don't want to deal with the complaints and transfer requests. The class lists are practically made in June.

Bradley Hills: They have decided to enter the 20th century this year and we are getting an email Thursday COB. I don't know if it includes the full class list or just DC's teacher. Class lists will be on the doors on Friday.
